Maria’s neighbor would mow the grass
in her bikini like clockwork
around the time others come home
from their shifts. This was the same hour
Maria’s husband would arrive
in the driveway after a long day.
This began his cue to shine his shoes
on the front porch.
So strategic, her mother on her visit
noticed the neighbor first
and pointed out the timing
to her daughter.
Maria saw for herself and
reminded her husband that his shoes
were already polished.
He better come inside
and eat his supper.
